Term 3 has been a bumper one for the PFA, with seemingly back to back events for students and parents alike. The variety of occasions has seen familiar faces and new ones enjoying the festivities.
We asked PFA president Jane Mudie to give us a wrap up of the term.
Winter Reds was a great success
On Sat 26 August, over 160 parents and others from the school community came out of winter hibernation to enjoy a night of live music, quality wine and fantastic wood oven pizza at the PFA’s Winter Reds event.
A marquee on the lawns of the Somerton Yacht club was the scene for a truly memorable event, where attendees not only got to relax and socialise, but raised over $4000 towards the SPW Bowen Gardens Nature Playspace. Thanks to the volunteers and sponsors who donated prizes and their time to assist in our fundraising efforts.

Fathers Day Breakfast
A brief break in the winter weather saw the sun smiling on all at the SPW annual Fathers Day Breakfast on Friday 1 September.
Braested Oval was full of happy students, dads, granddads and special friends as they burned off their cooked breakfast for the hour before the school bell rang. Special thanks to Somerton Rotary Club and the mums and dads who volunteered their time and cooked over 400 serves in such a short space of time. This certainly is a highlight on the school calendar.

The Dangers of Cyber Bullying – Parent Information Session with the Carly Ryan Foundation
The PFA was delighted to welcome Sonya Ryan from the Carly Ryan Foundation, at its second Parent Information Session of the year on the 6 September. During this highly informative evening, parents gained practical advice on navigating through and keeping our families safe in the increasing online/cyber world we live in. Sonya’s insight and dedication to making the online experience more positive for us all was inspiring and a wake-up call for many.
As term 3 draws to a close, we still have the Bounce Lock-in to look forward to on Friday 22 September. It concludes a jam-packed few months for the PFA.
What’s happening in Term 4?
Early in term 4, the children will once again gather on the grounds on SPW for the much-enjoyed Walkathon, to see how many laps of the ovals they can complete in an hour.
The PFA is already looking towards 2018 and at our AGM on 1 November will continue planning and finalising ideas for next year’s calendar of events.
However no year at SPW is complete without the annual Christmas Lunch, to be held on Friday 8 December (and the ELC Brunch on 12 December). To hear the whole school simultaneously break out into Christmas Carols brings a tear to many an eye.
SPW has a strong Parents and Friends Association and we’re proud of the ongoing work they do. If you’d like to know more about PFA events or you’re considering getting involved, contact the PFA team or visit our website.
