Transition to Secondary School for DARE Year 6 Graduates
As our DARE – Year 6 Graduate Diploma students embarked on the final days of their last primary school year, there was an air of excitement and anticipation as they prepare for the transition to high school.
Preparing the students for high school is a key part of the entire DARE Diploma year. The Year 6 Transition to Secondary School Program is one of the five Wellbeing & Grit learning activities and is dedicated to focussing on the essential aspect of readiness, recognising the pivotal role it plays in our ability to navigate upcoming challenges.
Throughout the year, Year 6 teachers have included a range of activities and strategies to help support our students in making a successful transition. The program concluded with our Year 6 Transition Day, a day dedicated to discussing how students can ready themselves for next year. The day was a mix of enjoyable activities; the conclusion of Mr Mesecke’s Communication Program, a celebratory pizza feast (courtesy of our Old Scholars’ Association) and valuable insights from our Year 7 and Year 12 old scholars into effective strategies for a seamless transition .
Communication Program
The goal of the Communication Program, run by Mr Paul Mesecke, is to develop dynamic communication skills in our Year 6 students and equip them with the knowledge and understanding to deliver a strong, effective and clear message whenever communicating with others.
The incorporation of the Communication Program has assisted with self-confidence and reflection and offered many opportunities to further develop and refine speaking and presentation skills.
The conclusion of Mr Mesecke’s Communication course added an additional layer of preparedness.
SPW Old Scholars Forum
A highlight of the program was the visit from some of our phenomenal SPW Old Scholars from the Class of 2018 and Class of 2022. They returned to share their experiences and wisdom with our Year 6 students as a part of a Q and A panel discussion.
Drawing from their own journeys, they offered insights into the challenges they faced, the lessons they learned, and the strategies that proved effective in navigating the intricacies of secondary school life.
Through candid conversations and shared anecdotes, our Year 6 students gained a deeper understanding of what to expect, how to overcome challenges, and the importance of resilience and adaptability. Isla Campbell, Mollie Pittman, Belle Letic, Gaius Venturini, Jett Taylor, Bella Hugenschmidt, and Ivy Hobbs, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your contributions.
We are proud to witness our students embark on this journey, and we extend our best wishes for a smooth and successful transition to secondary school. The lessons learned, friendships forged, and skills honed during the DARE Diploma year will undoubtedly serve as a strong foundation for the adventures that lie ahead. Here’s to the Class of 2023 – may your path be filled with growth, discovery, and accomplishment!
