St Peter’s Woodlands Creates Mini Olympics Inspired by Global Games
In the last month Olympic fever has taken over the nation and we at St Peter’s Woodlands have cheered our athletes on whilst taking inspiration for our own Mini Olympics.
Preschool and Kapara
As part of the Intergenerational program in the ELC, the Hastings children joined together with the residents from Kapara Residential care to participate some Olympic fun. The students and residents were each placed in a coloured team and took part in five events including: ring toss, balloon tennis, rhythmic ribbon dancing, bean bag throw, and an Olympic themed craft project. The balloon tennis was definitely a favourite! To complete the event, each participant was awarded a gold medal to acknowledge their hard work and ability to work well as a team. It was a wonderful activity to share in the excitement with our neighbours.
Reception – Olympic Potatoes
The Reception students created Potato athletes to compete in Potato Olympics. The students set about creating their own unique athlete, each with their own personality and spunk, tasked with thinking about which country their potato represented, what sport they competed in and why. Once the athletes were ready and warmed up, the students gathered on the oval for Potato Olympics, including such events as, Tator Twirl, Potato Balance, Spud Skate, Spud Sprint, Tator Target, Spudput and Spud Splashdown. After the competition the athletes enjoyed a medal presentation to conclude the games.
Lunchtime Olympics
During our Olympic-themed weeks, SPW students immersed themselves in the spirit of the games in lunchtime activities run by Miss Bert and Mr Mitton. The “SPW Olympic Rematch of the Day” was a big hit, with students re-enacting some of the most thrilling Olympic matches from the Kookaburras (men’s hockey team) win against Ireland’s 2-1 or the Matilda’s (women’s soccer team) thrilling 6-5 comeback against Zambia. We started with a soccer game that recreated a nail-biting Olympic match, and the enthusiasm continued with equally energetic hockey games. These activities brought the Olympic spirit to life at SPW and fostered a deeper appreciation for international sportsmanship and teamwork among our students.
Our youngest students from Reception to Year 2 truly embodied the Olympic spirit. They demonstrated a clear understanding of the values of fair play, teamwork, and enjoyment. Their participation in fun and easy sports games during lunch, and their visible excitement and teamwork, was a fantastic way for them to learn about the Olympic values while having lots of fun.
For the Year 3 to Year 6 students, lunchtimes were transformed into a thrilling showcase of friendly competition. The challenges were eagerly embraced by the students, who were excited to represent their favourite Olympic athletes. The matches were filled with cheers and laughter, highlighting not just their athletic skills but also the strong friendships and camaraderie among the students.
Olympic Artwork
Some of our Year 6 and Year 2 students unleashed their creativity by decorating the walls of the athletes’ rooms in the Olympic Village with their amazing artwork. Having created beautiful artworks during school hours, the pieces brought a touch of home and heartfelt messages of support to our athletes as they prepared to compete on the world stage for Australia. The Paris 2024 Australian Olympic Team members truly appreciate the beautiful artwork created by school children across Australia. Check out their reactions in this video!
