Curtain Up! Light the Light!
Our first major performance in the Dr Pamela Wall Centre was our Mid-Year Showcase featuring our choirs and ensembles. What a joy to have our own theatre to perform in. It was incredibly exciting to see the audience full across two performances and utilising the building’s state of the art sound and lighting systems. Even from a logistical point of view, having the backstage area and front curtains made things easier to manage and run.
The evening began with the message of ‘Brave’ by Sara Bareilles with the combined choirs and SPW band. What a way to start!
We moved into Instrumental Group and were treated to the Keyboard Ensemble including an appearance by the Avengers! SPW Band showed their skills on pieces like ‘High Hopes’ and a medley from K-Pop Demon Hunters finishing with the fun of ‘Iko Iko’. Our String Group is now so large they have split into a Junior and Senior group coming up with their own names, ‘Enchanted Strings’ and ‘Sonic Strings’. Both played brilliantly and really entertained the audience. They even had a few brave parents join on their violins too.
For the first time our lunchtime Dance Club joined in and performed a dance piece they have been learning with Ms. Doyle. We hope to have more dance in the future.
SPW has such a rich culture of singing and this begins with Junior Glee who treated us to nostalgic songs like ‘Rubber Duckie’, ‘Sing’ and a Muppet Medley that ended with ‘Rainbow Connection’. Not a dry eye in the house.
We proudly continued out tradition of having a Community Choir made up of parents, old scholars and friends of SPW. We even had one staff member who was from the St Peter’s Glenelg parish school days!
Chapel Choir had us on our feet with the Gloria Estefan smash hit and Show Choir brough it home with the classic ‘Glory of Love’, haunting ‘Homeward Bound’ and finally a roof raising medley from the ‘Sing’ cartoon.
Our combined singing finale was ‘From Now On’ from the Greatest Showman. A rousing way to finish a sensational night.
I was extremely proud of all our students and bursting with joy at their performances. We are incredibly lucky to have a world class venue to showcase the talents of our students at SPW.
