ELC Grandparents & Special Friends Day

23 September 2025

The ELC welcomed Grandparents and Special Friends over three afternoons.

Together in Piltangka Plaza
The event commenced in the Piltangka Plaza, which was a fitting place to hold the event, as Piltangka means “together”. To provide a link to our beachside community, the events’ theme was Under the Sea. The ELC children were gathered on the tiered seats in the plaza and sang with gusto the songs, ‘Slippery Fish’, ‘Grandma’s Glasses’ and ‘Yellow Submarine.’

Fruits of the Reception Explorer’s Program
As part of the Reception Explorer’s Program, the Preschool children visited the Art Rooms and painted sea creatures with Art teacher, Sarah Casson to use during the song, ‘Slippery Fish’. Over the three days of the event each Preschool Room took it in turn to carry the slippery fish, octopus, tuna fish, great white shark and humongous whale across the stage area as the song was sung!

Students become the Teachers
Mark DeLaine, Music teacher, taught the Preschool children the songs during their visit to the Music Room and they then taught the First Steps and Emerging Learners students the songs. Mark played the keyboard on the day and encouraged Grandparents and Special Friends to join in the song ‘Yellow Submarine’. Our First Steps children had decorated their own yellow submarine and enthusiastically waved them during the song!

Sharing Learning & Cuddles
The coffee van was onsite and was enjoyed by all before Grandparents and Special Friends were invited into each classroom to decorate a sea creature from the slippery fish song with their grandchild or special friend. The artwork was then able to be taken home by the visitors to remember their special visit.

This event is an important one on the ELC calendar, as we understand the vital role Grandparents and Special Friends are in the lives of our families. It certainly does take a village to raise children, and from all the smiling faces, many cuddles and laughter on the day, we have one very special ELC extended community.
