Shaping Our Future Together: Key Findings from the SPW Teaching and Learning Survey

A Closer Look at SPW’s Teaching and Learning Survey Results

Last term, we invited our parent community to participate in a Teaching and Learning Survey to gather valuable insights into what we’re doing well and where we can grow. Through this survey, we gained a clearer understanding of the strengths and needs within our classrooms, as well as diverse perspectives from our school community.

What We Learned
A significant takeaway from the survey was that many parents value a blend of teaching methods in our classrooms. Respondents expressed appreciation for a combination of explicit instruction, inquiry-based and hands-on learning, as well as play-based approaches, reflecting the multi-faceted approach we strive to implement.

While the majority of our community is familiar with our bespoke learning framework, Project RISE, about 20% indicated they aren’t yet aware of it. Moving forward, we will prioritise finding ways to better communicate the core principles and goals of Project RISE to ensure all families feel connected to our educational vision.

We were particularly encouraged to see that most of our parents are pleased with our offerings in STEM and Digital Technology. In the past, these areas were identified as needing development, and we have since made considerable investments in these programs. The positive feedback confirms that these enhancements are hitting the mark.

Facilities and Learning Environments
The survey also underscored our community’s appreciation for the school’s physical spaces, facilities, and learning environments. Over the past few years, we’ve dedicated substantial effort to updating and refreshing our learning areas and play spaces. This work is ongoing, with plans to complete updates to the Year 3 and Year 4 classrooms by 2025. We can’t wait for construction beginning soon on our new theatre, sports and multi-purpose centre.

Homework Preferences
Responses about homework expectations were mixed, with just under half of parents preferring home reading only, while a similar number supported 30 minutes of homework each day, inclusive of reading. If your child finds homework overwhelming or needs more challenge, we encourage you to speak with their teacher to find a balance that supports their individual needs.

Core Values and Service Learning
Our renewed emphasis on SPW’s core value of “Service” was clearly recognised, with the majority of parents agreeing that SPW promotes responsible action within and beyond our school community. We are proud of our Service Learning Program and grateful for our community’s enthusiastic involvement in events like the Anglicare Toy and Food Drive and the recent SSLC Colour Run.

Opportunities for Growth
While the survey reflected strong overall satisfaction with teaching and learning at SPW, it also pointed out opportunities for growth. Specifically, parents expressed a desire for more individualised learning and increased visibility into classroom activities through platforms like SeeSaw. We’re taking this feedback seriously and are working with staff and leadership on strategies to enhance these areas in the coming weeks.

Thank You
Thank you to every community member who took the time to share their feedback. These insights are invaluable to our ongoing mission of creating a more effective and inclusive educational environment for all.
