Celebrating Teamwork, Resilience, and Success: A Look Back at Term 3’s Sports Highlights
Last term was filled with fantastic opportunities for our students to engage in a wide range of sports, and it’s been wonderful to see so many students participating enthusiastically. From team sports to individual achievements, there’s a lot to reflect on and celebrate.
Team Sports
Our students made great strides in team sports during Term 3, with soccer, football, and netball as key highlights. These activities allowed students to collaborate, hone their skills, and enjoy the camaraderie of playing on a team. Whether competing in matches or working hard in training, students demonstrated solid teamwork and resilience, and we’re proud of their efforts and commitment throughout the term.
3-6 Run Club: One of the most notable developments last term was the expansion of Run Club, which now includes 78 students from Year 3-Year 6. The growing interest reflects how much students have embraced this program to improve their fitness, challenge themselves, and have fun. It’s been fantastic to see their dedication to those earlier morning runs, and we look forward to the continued success of this program.
Years 4-6 Swimming Carnival: The Year 4-Year 6 Swimming Carnival at Immanuel Pool was another major event from Term 3. This year marked the first time we tracked official records, which added extra excitement to the competition. Many students achieved personal bests, with several setting new school records. The atmosphere was electric, with house teams cheering on swimmers and students supporting one another throughout the day. It was a truly inclusive event, allowing all students to participate, whether in competitive races or more relaxed fun events. Well done to everyone who participated!
Lunchtime Olympic Rematches
In support of the Olympic Games held earlier in the term, we introduced Lunchtime Olympic Rematches, where students from Year 3-Year 6 participated in various sports recreating Olympic events. These daily activities brought excitement and friendly competition to lunchtime, starting with soccer and field hockey. It was a great opportunity for students to try new sports and engage in a bit of fun during the school day as well as be active in their lunch break. We look forward to offering similar opportunities again in the future.
District Athletics Success
Another significant highlight of Term 3 was our outstanding performance at the District Athletics Day, where SPW took first place in the large schools’ competition. We are particularly proud of the ten students selected to represent the Southwest District at the SAPSASA Athletics Carnival. A special congratulations goes to Harry L (Year 5), who was selected to represent South Australia at the upcoming Under 12 State Championships in Sydney. This success is a testament to our athletes’ hard work and dedication.
Primary Schools Volleyball Carnival
The Primary Schools Volleyball Carnival finals also took place last term, and while our students didn’t take the overall win, they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Their efforts, teamwork, and improvement throughout the term were evident in their play, and the skills they’ve developed will certainly benefit them in future competitions. It was great seeing their passion for the sport and dedication to working as a team.
Statewide Knockout Football Grand Final
We are proud to share that SPW won the Statewide Knockout Football Grand Final for the first time, defeating Mitcham in an exciting final! Congratulations to Occy W, who was named Best on Ground for outstanding performance, and Jack E, who kicked six goals to help secure the victory. We thank our coaches, Steve Merkel and Justin White, for their excellent leadership throughout the season. Well done to the entire team for this historic achievement!
It’s been a rewarding term for sport, and we look forward to building on these successes for Term 4.
