Our Year 6 students embarked on an exciting and educational adventure to Canberra, Australia’s capital city.
The trip was a highlight of the year, filled with memorable experiences, fascinating discoveries, and plenty of opportunities to see classroom learning come to life.
Democracy in Action
Over four days, students explored some of the most important sites in our nation. At Parliament House, we were fortunate to visit while Parliament was in session, giving students a real sense of how laws are debated, and decisions are made. It was a powerful way to understand the role of government and democracy in action.
Hands-on Learning
Hands-on learning was also a big part of the trip. At Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre, students immersed themselves in interactive exhibits, experimenting, testing, and discovering the wonders of science in action. At the Royal Australian Mint, we learnt how Australia’s coins are made, even getting to see the factory floor where production takes place. Sport lovers particularly enjoyed the Australian Institute of Sport, where we gained insight into the training and dedication required to be an elite athlete, and even tried out some sporting challenges themselves.
Civics Education Rebate
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist us in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributed $90 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program towards the costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. SPW would like to sincerely thank the Australian Government for their support of this valuable program.
The Year 6 trip to Canberra will remain a standout moment of 2025. A journey of learning, fun, and inspiration that students will not soon forget.
