The Junior Primary years at St Peter’s Woodlands are a time of wonder, exploration and growth. From the moment students step out of our Early Learning Centre or through our gates for the first time, they are welcomed into a nurturing and stimulating environment where their natural curiosity is encouraged, their individuality is celebrated, and their confidence begins to grow.
Our dedicated teachers foster a strong sense of belonging and guide students through the vital early years of formal schooling with care, creativity, and purpose.
A Focus on Foundations
In Reception to Year 2, we lay the groundwork for lifelong learning. Students are immersed in rich literacy and numeracy programs, supported by hands-on, play-based and inquiry-driven learning experiences. Through integrated units of inquiry, children learn to ask questions, think critically, and express themselves confidently.
We also nurture social and emotional growth, equipping students with the skills to build positive relationships, regulate their emotions, and collaborate effectively.
A World of Learning Opportunities
Alongside classroom learning, students enjoy:
-
Specialist lessons in Music, Art, Japanese, PE, Digital Technologies, STEM (Year 2) and Library
-
Buddies program with older students, building friendships and confidence
-
Assemblies and Chapel that foster a strong sense of community and belonging
-
Participation in school-wide events such as Book Week, sports days, and performances
- Every second year, Reception to Year 2 students take to the stage in our Junior Musical—an inspiring opportunity to grow in confidence, creativity and teamwork.
-
Opportunities to explore interests through lunchtime clubs and co-curricular offerings
These experiences help children develop confidence, build relationships, and feel part of the broader school community.
Transition that Builds Confidence
Starting school is a big milestone—for both children and their families. Our transition process is carefully designed to make this journey smooth, positive and exciting.
Families are supported through:
-
A comprehensive Flying Start Program in the lead-up to Reception, including classroom visits and orientation sessions
-
Connection with Reception teachers and early years staff prior to starting
-
Strong communication between home and school during the early weeks
-
Close collaboration with our ELC team for students already attending the SPW Early Learning Centre
This gentle, supportive transition ensures students feel safe, known and ready to begin their school journey.
A Focus on Wellbeing and Belonging
At St Peter’s Woodlands, we believe wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. Our approach to student care is proactive and personalised, with programs that build emotional intelligence, resilience, and respectful relationships.
Students participate in:
-
Weekly Chapel and wellbeing check-ins
-
Social and emotional learning programs
-
A dedicated Personal Development curriculum
-

We work closely with families to ensure every child feels safe, supported and known.

Beyond the Classroom
In Junior Primary, students participate in various activities beyond academics, including the Year 2 sleepover, a first step toward outdoor education. They also join in school-wide events like Book Week and Harmony Day, explore music ensembles, engage in after school sports and after-school clubs, and connect with their peers through House competitions and class meetings. These experiences promote confidence, responsibility, and teamwork, laying the groundwork for future growth.
Let Their Journey Begin
At St Peter’s Woodlands, the Junior Primary years are filled with joy, discovery, and growth. We provide a strong, supportive start that helps children flourish not just academically, but as confident, kind and capable young people.
