What excitement this year’s Book Week has produced in the SPW Library with the theme, ‘Dreaming with eyes open…’
The library transformed into a cloud-filled space much to the children’s delight. Fairy lights and butterflies added to the feel as children engaged with this year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) shortlisted books by Australian authors and illustrators. An exclamation of ‘Wow’ was uttered by many students entering the library during the week with the amazing displays.
Reception to Year 4 children judged the Early Childhood or Picture Book sections during library lessons in the lead up to the announcement of the official winners during our annual parade.
The library was packed at lunchtimes with happy children engaging with the theme and shortlisted books through competitions, art, craft, stories, short-story writing and more. Years 5 & 6 students kindly volunteered their time to support younger students take part in the event.
Book Week concluded with the annual parade on McKenzie playing fields of ELC to Year 6 in full book character or theme-related dress-ups. The children’s excitement was infectious as we moved to the Chapel for the announcement of the winners from the shortlisted books.
A roar could be heard across the school whenever SPW students correctly picked the judged winner and there was amazement for some of the judge’s choices when favourites were not selected.
At the end of another fabulous Book Week we are already looking forward to next year’s event with much anticipation.
