Sport and Physical Education – Term 1 Wrap-Up

10 April 2026

What an outstanding Term 1 has been for sport and physical education at SPW.

Across every year level, every court and every field, our students have embraced competition, challenged themselves and represented and participated with pride.

Afterschool Sport
Our Years 3 to 6 after-school basketball program has once again been a highlight of the weekly calendar for many students, with students developing their skills and competing with great enthusiasm. Volleyball saw a large surge in popularity this term, with more students signing up than ever before, a testament to the growing culture of participation across the school.
In cricket, we fielded two teams made up of a wonderful mix of abilities and experience levels. What stood out most was the effort and attitude of every player. Regardless of skill level, both teams trained hard, supported one another and gave their absolute best on game day, exactly what school sport is all about.

Knockout Cricket
SPW was proudly represented in the Statewide Knockout Cricket competition by both our boys and girls teams. A special mention must go to our girls’ team, the majority of whom had never played cricket before entering the competition. Their willingness to learn, compete and give it a go was truly inspiring and something the whole school community should be proud of. Unfortunately, both teams were knocked out in the first round of the competition, coming up against Grange Primary (Girls) and St Martin de Porres (Girls).

Cross Country Carnival
Our Years 3 to 6 Cross Country Carnival was a wonderful celebration of effort and determination held on Thursday, Week 10. With Years 3 and 4 tackling the 2km course and Years 5 and 6 taking on 2km or 3km, every student who lined up and gave their best deserves recognition. Congratulations to Eyre House on taking out first place, followed by Light, Flinders and Sturt. The commitment shown by students during PE lessons in the lead-up was evident on the day, and it was fantastic to see the local community cheering our runners on.

PE Lessons
In the classroom and on the field, our PE program has been packed with energy and competition. Years 3–5 students have thrown themselves into the Rise Up Cup, while our Year 6 cohort has been competing fiercely in the Dare Wizard Cup. Both programs continue to build skill, teamwork and a love of physical activity across the school. Reception to Year 2 PE saw a focus on Fundamental Movement Skills and Fair Play units across a range of activities. All classes showed a strong love of movement and willingness to improve their skills.

Representative Honours
Congratulations to the three students selected for SAPSASA Swimming and to our student selected for SAPSASA Softball. Representing the school at district level is a tremendous achievement, and we are incredibly proud of each of them.

Run Club and Beach Run
If one statistic captures the spirit of sport at SPW this term, it is this: our Run Club now has 132 students enrolled, bigger than it has ever been. Add to that a Beach Run program at full capacity with 50 students every term, and it is clear that the desire to be active and involved at SPW is stronger than ever.

Our Reception to Year 2 students also have plenty to look forward to, with the opportunity to try a wonderful range of activities including gymnastics, basketball, dance, hockey and netball. It is a great way for our younger students to explore new sports, build confidence and develop a love of being active from an early age.

Once again, it has been a privilege to watch our students grow, compete and support one another this term. A massive thank you to all coaches, team managers and teachers who have supported our programs. SPW is truly an active and extraordinary school, and we look forward to doing it all again and more in term 2.
