Primary

Years 3 to Year 5

Inspiring confident learners and compassionate citizens

The Primary years are a time of exciting growth and exploration. At St Peter’s Woodlands, students in Years 3 to 5 are guided through this formative stage of their school journey with a focus on building independence, deepening academic understanding, and developing strong personal values.

We provide a supportive and stimulating environment where each child is encouraged to take on new challenges, discover their unique strengths, and grow in confidence.

Learning that Sparks Curiosity and Independence

In Year 3 to Year 5, students move into increasingly complex learning experiences.

Our curriculum is designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration across all subject areas. Literacy and numeracy remain core focuses, alongside integrated studies that challenge students to explore big ideas and make real-world connections.

Through our bespoke Project RISE learning framework, students are encouraged to reflect on their learning, set personal goals, and build the key skills they need to thrive—both now and in the future.

Specialist Subjects and Extended Learning

Students engage in a diverse range of specialist subjects including:

  • Music

  • Japanese

  • Physical Education

  • Visual Arts

  • Digital Technologies

  • STEM

These subjects provide new ways for students to express themselves, develop technical skills, and pursue personal interests. In-class learning is further enriched by excursions, guest speakers, and interactive experiences that bring learning to life.

Facilities that Support Growing Minds

Our Year 3 to Year 5 students benefit from access to:

  • Flexible learning spaces that encourage collaboration and student agency

  • Specialist japanese, art, and music rooms

  • Outdoor learning areas and gardens

  • A dedicated Library and Technology Hub

  • Sporting facilities that cater to individual and team development

These spaces support a diverse range of learning styles and promote independence, creativity and engagement.

A Focus on Wellbeing and Belonging

At St Peter’s Woodlands, we believe wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. Our approach to student care is proactive and personalised, with programs that build emotional intelligence, resilience, and respectful relationships.

Students participate in:

  • Weekly Chapel and wellbeing check-ins

  • Social and emotional learning programs

  • A dedicated Personal Development curriculum

  • Year-level initiatives that support kindness, inclusion and positive peer interactions

We work closely with families to ensure every child feels safe, supported and known.

Beyond the Classroom

The Primary years are rich with opportunities for students to explore new passions, connect with peers, and grow their sense of responsibility.

Students can take part in:

  • Interschool sport and SAPSASA competitions

  • Music ensembles, choirs and performances

  • Lunchtime and after-school clubs

  • Whole school events such as Book Week, Harmony Day and House competitions

  • Outdoor education experiences, including overnight camps from Year 3 onwards

Each experience helps build confidence, teamwork, and a strong sense of community.

Preparing for Leadership in Year 6

The Primary years at SPW are all about growing capable, compassionate young people who are ready to lead.

In Years 3 to 5, students begin developing leadership skills through opportunities that build confidence, responsibility and a sense of service to others. These experiences lay the groundwork for their final year of Primary School and their participation in the DARE Graduate Diploma in Year 6.

Leadership preparation includes:

  • Opportunities to serve on the Student School Leadership Council (SSLC)

  • Mentoring and buddy programs with younger year levels

  • Leading aspects of House events and Chapel services

  • Public speaking and representing the school in community events

  • Planning and hosting the Children’s Kindness Convention—a student-led initiative that brings together young people from across Adelaide to promote kindness, empathy and inclusion

Supporting Growth through Transition

At St Peter’s Woodlands, we recognise that transition is more than just moving up a year level—it’s about feeling confident, connected and ready to thrive in a new environment.

Our transition programs are thoughtfully designed to support:

  • Current SPW students as they move through Years 3 to 5, helping them adjust to new routines, expectations and learning environments

  • New students joining SPW at any year level, ensuring they feel welcomed, supported and part of the community from day one

Support includes:

  • Orientation experiences tailored to each year level

  • Opportunities to meet teachers, classmates and buddies before starting

  • Ongoing wellbeing check-ins and classroom support

  • Strong collaboration with families during the settling-in period

Discover the Difference

Our Primary program strikes a balance between academic growth and character development, ensuring that every child is inspired to learn, challenged to grow, and supported to succeed.
