Rehearsals and Performances

SPW Matilda Jr the Musical

SPW Matilda Jr the MusicalTwo terms of hard work with after school rehearsals and extra lunch time practices plus two intense days of ‘bumping in’ our temporary theatre, led to eight performances for the school community.

The buzz in the air was electric as the energy from the students blew the roof off Baddams Hall. Our policy has always been to turn no students away who wanted to be involved and it was great to see everyone giving it their all.

Costumes and Set Design

SPW Matilda Jr the MusicalHundreds of costumes and props are created and sourced to create the magical world of Matilda. The set was incorporated into the older students’ art lessons where they were able to design and contribute their artwork. We strive to encourage our students to be risk takers and the musical sees this in action as students overcome their nerves to perform to their peers and the school community.

Choreography and Stage Management

We were fortunate to have old scholars Zephyr and Jake return to help out with the choreography and stage management. And of course the staff team who give up their time to make the musical happen. A special thank you to the many volunteers who also assisted backstage and front of house. I am incredibly proud of every student involved and the show exceeded all my expectations. It was amazing.

Lifelong Memories Created

SPW Matilda Jr the MusicalWorking on the school musical creates life long memories for our students and I know they will look back fondly on ‘Matilda Jr.’.

We have received fantastic feedback such as;

“While I could commend all of you on the set, the costumes and props, the acting and singing and the quality of the production as a whole, there is something much more significant that this opportunity has given my daughter and I’m guessing other students who were involved as well. Being part of a production such as this from the audition stage right through to final performances has seen my daughter grow in confidence, resilience and her sense of self. She has gained a feeling of accomplishment and pride in her ability and her tenacity to step out of her comfort zone, push through any nerves and thoughts of doubt, and to experience what it is like to achieve something she at times never thought was possible.”  – Parent, Year 6 student

“… one of the most important outcomes are the skills and values our children learn in preparing and performing on stage. Resilience, team work, focus and a sense of community and belonging just to name a few. All the values that make St Peter’s Woodlands a unique and wonderful school.”  – Parent, Year 4 student

“Take a big, big bow. What a wonderful show you put on and so much talent. I have no involvement in the school but just love seeing children performing in musical theatre and perform they did! The energy was fantastic, not to mention the many costume changes – backstage must have been a very busy place. To all the children who took part they should be very proud of themselves. To all the music staff – conductors of the show as well as the choirs (not forgetting those sitting on the floor guiding the students) well done. Congratulations to all. “👏👏👏👏👏 – Heather, Audience Member

The musical is such an important part of the culture at St Peter’s Woodlands and a showcase of the creative arts abilities of our students. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!
