Year 6 students flew to Canberra to undertake a four-day educational tour of the nation’s capital.

The students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The tour began with arriving at Adelaide Airport at 4.30am on Tuesday. In order to take full advantage of the many attractions Canberra had to offer, the days began early and the itinerary was certainly packed!

We were fortunate enough to visit the National Museum of Australia, Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, National Science and Technology Centre – Questacon, Government House, Parliament House, Mt Ainslie Lookout, Australian Institute of Sport, Deep Space Communication Complex, National Electoral Education Centre, National Capital Museum, and cycling around part of Lake Burley Griffin.

The children got to meet so many interesting people and participate in lots of great activities. Some of the highlights were witnessing the children show respect at the Australian War Memorial and then later enjoy 2 hours of hands on fun at Questacon.

Throughout the tour, the students were outstanding in their attitude and behaviour with many people commenting on how extraordinary they were.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist us in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributed $90 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program towards the costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. SPW would like to sincerely thank the Australian Government for their support of this valuable program.

The Year 6 trip to Canberra will remain a standout moment of 2025. A journey of learning, fun, and inspiration that students will not soon forget.
