Celebrating Stories, Literacy and Community

24 June 2026

Opportunities to celebrate the joy of reading, engage in acts of service, and connect with the wider Australian community through books and storytelling.

National Simultaneous Storytime
Students eagerly anticipated this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime, an annual event that has been bringing communities together through reading since 2000. Each year, a picture book by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, preschools, childcare centres and bookshops across the country.

In the lead-up to the event, students enjoyed a range of themed craft activities and a Luna Roo scavenger hunt in the Library. To build even more anticipation, Luna Roo, The Kangaroo Baller was placed under lock and chain to prevent any early peeks!

This year’s featured book was Luna Roo, The Kangaroo Baller by Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd.  St Peter’s Woodlands has long been participating in this initiative which celebrates Australian children’s literature, and this year decided to add a unique twist to the occasion.

A team of staff members collaborated to bring the story to life as it was read aloud. Dressed in costume and bringing their best animal impersonations to their roles, they entertained a captivated audience with a lively live-action performance.

Adding to the excitement, several Year 5 and 6 students showcased their talents before the performance. The fun continued at lunchtime, when they led Junior Primary students through a series of skills and drills on Braested Oval, ensuring the spirit of the day carried on well beyond the story itself.

The Great Book Swap

As part of National Reconciliation Week, SPW proudly hosted the Great Book Swap, raising more than $1,800 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The Foundation supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in remote parts of Australia by providing access to culturally relevant books and literacy resources.

In the weeks leading up to the event, students generously donated preloved books to be sold at the swap. This provided a meaningful opportunity for our students to participate in an act of service.

On the day, our Library Leaders enthusiastically assisted students as they browsed and selected books in exchange for a gold coin donation.

Thank you to our school community for your generosity and support. Your involvement helped make the Great Book Swap a wonderful success and a meaningful way to celebrate National Reconciliation Week.
