Innovating for Earth and Beyond

This semester, students at SPW participated in the Kids in Space Challenge, run by Makers Empire in collaboration with The Andy Thomas Space Foundation. Working in teams, students researched and developed innovative solutions to one of two challenges: designing something to help astronauts live and work in space or applying space technologies to solve problems on Earth. After weeks of preparation, two shortlisted teams were selected to present their 3D-designed solutions at a showcase event in Klemzig.

One team, Eva, Zofia and Grace, created the “Debris Destroyer,” addressing the growing problem of space junk caused by the increasing number of satellites in orbit. Their design featured a sophisticated system to track, collect, and destroy debris using components such as claws, tubes, conveyor belts, fans, and crushers. The second team, Ruby, Jakobo and Riley, developed “Snooozzzees,” a creative solution to the challenges astronauts face when sleeping in microgravity. Their design combined a mattress and wearable onesie using electromagnets, allowing astronauts greater comfort and freedom of movement while resting.

A highlight of the event was the prestigious Community Award, judged by a panel of industry and community professionals who assessed creativity, problem-solving, practicality, and presentation skills. The judges were so impressed with the quality of both teams’ work that they awarded a tie, recognising both groups as winners. This achievement reflects the dedication and effort of all students involved, including those who gave up numerous lunchtimes to participate. A special thank you to Mrs Fazzalari for her continued support throughout the program.
